UPDATE ON PARISH BUILDING PROJECTS
THE BUNGALOW at 4102 Ibis Street was acquired by the parish (50% gift, 50% mortgage) in the early ‘90s as a future pre-school site. However, in 1995 the City Planning Department confirmed that the property was zoned exclusively for single family dwellings and that there was no hope of getting it re-zoned for educational uses. Hence the temporary Youth Office in the bungalow was shut down and the house was rented.
Just before Msgr Mimnagh retired, the parish paid off the mortgage but failed to record this action. Hence, when the Parish Finance Council advised that the bungalow be sold, with the proceeds to be used for our new pre-school (the original intent of the gift/purchase), we discovered this loose end.
The heirs of the original benefactor/seller have confirmed through their attorney that the deed of trust was paid off, and this is in the process of being recorded. Escrow is expected to close in mid-August. (No agent’s commission was involved!)
THE OLD RECTORY (7200 sq ft), which was built for four priests and a resident cook/housekeeper, lost its last resident last week when Fr Clark moved into a one-bedroom apartment two blocks away. (He’s now walking to church like many of our parishioners.)
THE BUILDING PERMIT for the demolition of the old rectory, construction of the school addition, and re-fencing/landscaping of the parking lot/playground should be forthcoming by Labor Day, at which time the rectory demolition will begin immediately.
The parking/playground project will be implemented at high speed to minimize inconvenience to our children and church goers.
THE ELEVATOR & HALL RESTROOMS simply have to be attended to. We have asked our contractor for a supplementary bid for possible implementation as part of the school addition contract. We already have this permit, but as usual, everything depends on funding. When we receive bids, we’ll share that information. If we are able to move forward, construction will be timed so as to minimize disruption to scheduled Hall activities.
TIMETABLE: All projects should be completed by the close of school in June 2009. This will give us ample time to settle into the new school office, library, and science lab, and enable us to launch our multi-level pre-school program in September 2009.
OUR OLD CHURCH BELL which is temporarily waiting behind the rectory will find a permanent home in a little courtyard which is part of the new addition.
THE VACANT LOT at 4112 Ibis Street will be retained for possible future construction of a small priest’s residence after all other parish projects have been fully funded and completed.
